Explanation & How It Works

A discount means a reduction in the normal price of any commodity or service. It is very important to understand the relation between discounts and sales tax for good budgeting and wise buying.

Double Discounts and Combination Discounts

When a shop gives a "discount of 30% and an extra 20% off at checkout," the discounts DO NOT total 50%! The second discount is applied on top of the first discount. If something costs $100, then 30% off makes it cost $70, and another 20% off of $70 saves you $14, meaning you paid only $56 (actual discount = 44%, not 50%).

Calculation Formula & Rules

Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount Rate / 100)

Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

With Sales Tax = Final Price × (1 + (Tax Rate / 100))

Example Calculation

Example: A designer watch priced at $200 has a 35% discount with 8% sales tax.

  1. Discount: $200 × 0.35 = $70.00 saved.
  2. Subtotal: $200 − $70 = $130.00.
  3. Sales Tax: $130 × 0.08 = $10.40.
  4. Final Out-of-Pocket Cost: $140.40.

Psychological Tactics in Common Retail Pricing

  • Charm Pricing (.99 pricing): Items priced at $19.99 create a perception in the human brain that the product is worth $10, not $20.
  • Anchoring: A product with an artificially inflated MSRP ($300) to make the sale price of $150 a good bargain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 50% off the same as Buy One Get One Free (BOGO)? ▼
Yes, if you buy two items, BOGO gives you two items for the price of one, which mathematically equals a 50% discount across both items.
Does sales tax apply before or after the discount? ▼
In almost all tax jurisdictions, sales tax is assessed on the final discounted price that you actually pay at the cash register.
